Starting An Internet Marketing Business

Hi Folks, Internet-Marketing-Tips-Get-Organized

Today I want to give you some Internet Marketing tips for the beginners and intermediate marketers.

I wish I could have had this list when I first started out because I got myself into a mess as time went on
and had to clean it up later on, So I hope this can help you in some small way.

I was going to write about something else but I will put that up next week as I feel I want to write about this first as my first official blog post for Troy’s Tips. I will post the other one next week I Promise.

Also, sorry the article is long but It needed to be, so grab a coffee.

So, today I have 5 tips for you.

Call them Internet marketing tips or organizational tips or just common sense tips but I feel they are important to start out with to move forward.

There’s a lot of ways to make money online and beginners can get overwhelmed or confused on the who, what, where, how, why and when, but if you don’t build a solid foundation then it can come tumbling down later on or hinder your growth because you are disorganized.

I am not saying to focus on this too much as you can get bogged down into thinking that doing all this organizational ‘stuff’ is actual income producing work, It isn’t, but it is important to start off on the right foot.

5 Things You Must Do Before Starting An Internet Marketing Business

1. Internet Marketing is a business, so damn well treat it as such. I mean it guys and gals!

I know this sounds obvious but I have to say it, as I often see marketers wandering around with their head in the clouds, dreaming of that million dollar payday.

They jump from one thing to another always looking for that easier, faster or better way to make money.

Yes, this business can give you a great lifestyle but you need to work hard for it and more importantly you need to work smart and be consistent.

You might have been working for a boss, in a business opportunity before, in some MLM company or even have your own offline business. You may have succeeded or failed at these but the fact still remains you’re a bit cautious about jumping in head first to start up an internet business.

Yes, I said Business.

If you want to diddle daddle around making a few dollars here and there then you don’t have a business you have a nice little hobby and you certainly aren’t serious about it.

Offline business owners will find it easier to have this business mindset as it is an everyday thing for them and their business sense and discipline can benefit them with their online business.

Hey that doesn’t mean if you don’t have an offline business that you are doomed to failure, I just wanted to use that as an example of the right mindset to have.

So decide here and now that you will treat this as a business.

I don’t care if you put in 5 hours a week or 50 hours a week, just be focused and be consistent on a regular basis and schedule in time to work on what you need to work on to move forward.

Write a plan down and stick to it.

Know what you want and know why you are doing it.

I can write about Goal setting if you want me to, just contact me to write a post about it.

2. Get Organized.

Don’t start off by saying “When I start to get busy and make money then I will get things in order”

Sorry, it doesn’t work that way and it’s just a lazy attitude to have.

A. Clean your workspace up.

Get rid of all the crap lying around in your office or desk.

Everything must have its own spot to live.

Look after your workspace and it will serve you well.

B. Get a filing system.

It can be a filing cabinet or a hand held folder with inserts, but get something to categorize all your papers. This also needs its own spot to live.

C. Clean up your computers desktop.

This is what I suggest. Feel free to make your own system up.

All your desktop shortcuts should live in “My Documents”

You should have a “My Documents” folder on your computer.

Keep ALL folders in “My Documents”.

Do not have any stray files in “My Documents”, everything should live in its own folder.

Make folders for each and every category.

For Example:

Home Budget

Etc.. Etc..

In your Business folder you might like to have

for example:

Internet Marketing

Business Goals

Business tools

Etc.. Etc..

Now open your business folder and make 1 folder named “Internet Marketing” and have folders within those folders.

For Example:

Blogging Folder

SEO Folder

Traffic Generation Folder

Good Articles Folder

Ideas Folder

Tools Folder

Software Folder

PPC Folder

Etc…Etc… You can add to this later as needed.

Now, Place shortcuts to the folders you use often onto your desktop.

For Example:

Internet Marketing

Etc.. Etc..

All you do is right click on the folder and choose “Send shortcut to desktop”

Now you should have a clutter free desktop with shortcuts to you most used folders. I actually align my folders around the edge of my screen so I can see the screen saver in the middle.

This also means when you back up your data, everything is already in your “My Documents” and you just have the shortcuts to it now on your desktop.

3. Get yourself an alarm clock or timer and take breaks.

This is one I tend to have a problem with when I am really getting into some nitty gritty information or designing etc..

It is so damn easy to lose track of time when you’re on the computer.

It can also be detrimental to your health if you do not take breaks.

( Trust me I know..My gym membership needs to be used more as my wife keeps pointing out… and darling if your reading this, thankyou for looking out for me J )

That brings me to my next point…

4. Get support from your partner.

To be fair to your partner in life, tell them your goals and what you want to achieve.

When I first started out with Internet Marketing, all my wife could see is me going to work and coming home and spending time on the “Internet”.

Little did I realize she resented it and rightly so.

I was lucky enough to realize this early on and sat down and had a real heart to heart chat about what I wanted moving forward in our lives and that this required me to spend a certain amount of time learning and implementing what I learned.

It was bumpy at the start but she knew why I was doing it, for us and our kids.

I told her I didn’t want to spend my whole life working 60 hours a week and not spending time with them.

If your partner knows your ‘WHY’ then it makes it so much easier as you go along.

But make sure you schedule time with your family no matter how important you think it is to sit in front of your computer.

By the way, If you’re single then put your head down and get moving and you will thank me later when or if you do start a family down the track.

5. Are you motivated?

Read books and listen to positive influences in your life.

When I first got into networking, I thought to myself “I don’t need a bunch of rev me up or hyped up books or audios to keep me motivated”.

Well it turns out once I got my.. eh hemm, ‘lovely attitude’ out of the way I learnt a lot about goal setting and being in a positive frame of mind.

Did you know it has been scientifically proven that we have grooves in our brain that etch habits and thought patterns and shape the way we think if we keep repeating the same thoughts over and over.

That is why we are creatures of habit and resist change.

Being negative is easy because it is the path of least resistance.

It’s easier to say “That won’t work so I may as well not waste my time by trying it”

Or “I can’t do this, I am not smart enough, it’s too hard”

We have all learnt to be a glass half full or glass half empty type of person.

However, we can change out thought patterns.

It takes 30 days of going against the negative thoughts to change how you think and make a positive change in your life.

Some time ago I made a conscious effort to pull myself up every time I had a negative thought.

And boy was it hard at first.

It wasn’t until after I continuously slapped myself over the wrist for a month, every time I had a negative thought, that things started to look up for me.

After that it got a little bit easier as time went on and I bounce back easier now.

I find that Positive books help me keep those grooves in my brain geared towards the positive so I don’t slip back into negative thinking so easily when things don’t go to plan.

I still slip up when things don’t go my way.. but at least I jump right back up again and move forward faster than I did before.

You will find this happens to you too.

So Read, Read and Read some more. If you don’t like reading then listen to audios from people like Anthony Robbins or Jim Rohn.

I hope these tips help you. I am glad I wrote them for you.

Coming next week…

A really good article that I was asked to write about..

Thanks for the emails guys.

You know starting a new blog isn’t easy and requires some thought.

It’s sometimes not clear what you should write about and you wonder what people would like to read. In the end you just have to put your head down and start writing.

So I will continue to write what I want to write about and if I get some more suggestions from you guys out there then please let me know and I will do my best to come through for you, deal? Great.

Thanks for reading,

‘Till next week,

    Hey Troy,

Great blog. I totally agree with you on getting your partner on board. My girlfriend has been supportive of me from the get-go, which I’m very grateful for. In fact she’s the only person in my life that’s supported me and believed in all this. Even during those first few months when I wasn’t making any sales at all.

Great post and great tips troy.
The tip about taking regular breaks touches a chord with me because when I first started online….I didn’t and found myself getting all wound up and achieving nothing.

Since then I work a maximum of 90 minutes before having at least a 10 minute break. At the end of the day I might have had 5 ten minute breaks but rather than losing 50 minutes of productivity I find that I have actually gained immensely in quality achievement particularly when I’m writing.

    Hey Troy,

    Really enjoyed the read.

I totally agree with you on numbers 3 and 4. I have a very supportive girlfriend (she doesn’t buy me pies and pints mind you), but she does listen to me when I’m moaning about lack of sales or no traffic.

The rest of my friends roll their eyes.

As for number 3, I have a timer on my mobile phone which I set to 50 minutes and turn off the radio for that period of time. I work for 50 minutes, often on crap that I hate like rewriting, and then I take a 10 minute break and go and make fun of the guinea pigs. Works a treat!

I have to say though, I love my messy desktop ;) Gives me a sense of rebellion and anarchy.

Great blog, looking forward to reading more.

    Hi Keith,
    Thanks for the comments.
    You rebel
Hey, I just do what works for me but if you can live with a messy desktop and my docs, power to you mate.
I am putting up a new post on the weekend on choosing domain names.
Or, I may do it as a downloadable ebook for everyone, Free.
Hope everyone gets value out of it.
